Join award-winning photographers Lynne Pomeranz and David Cramer as they guide you through the breath-taking landscapes of New Mexico that are home to wonderful birding and exciting wild horse interactions. We will explore the 76,000-acre Jicarilla Wild Horse Territory, home to over 300 free-roaming and spirited wild horses of mixed ancestry. These horses roam a landscape that varies from open range, to pinon and juniper woodlands, to tall ponderosa pines, with distant Colorado mountain ranges rising over the horizons. We will also visit the wild horses of Placitas, who make their home in the rolling high desert foothills of the Sandia Mountain, with iconic New Mexican mesas in the background. And yet another wild horse outing will take us to the Monero Mustang Sanctuary, a 4,500-acre ranch with scenic views and a large herd of over fifty horses. This is an incredibly colorful herd of horses boasting red roans, blue roans, grays, bays, duns, palominos, sorrels, and more. Many other wildlife species can be found in these settings, including coyote, bobcat, elk, deer, bears, turkeys, quail, fox and mountain lions, along with a wide array of raptors. In addition, we will venture to the shores of beautiful Heron Lake, where we will have the opportunity to observe and photograph nesting Ospreys, who return to this location every Spring. This is an ideal time of the year to photograph unique animal behavior – including stallions battling to form their bands, newly born foals exploring the landscape, and freshly hatched Osprey chicks.
The workshop will start on the first day with an afternoon orientation, followed by an evening session photographing the wild horses of Placitas, just north of Albuquerque. The second day will commence with a sunrise session with the horses, after which we will travel north to Chama, which will serve as our headquarters for the remaining three days. The workshop will end after the early morning shoot on the last scheduled day.
