About the locations:
Jicarilla Wild Horse Territory
At this time, the 76,000-acre horse range is home to almost 300 free-roaming horses of mixed ancestry. Some band seem to invite us closer while others flee across the landscape offering a variety of photographic opportunities. The landscape varies from open range, to pinon and juniper dotted woodlands, to tall ponderosa pines as it approaches the Colorado border. In addition to the horses, many wildlife species including elk, deer, bears, turkeys, mountain lions, golden eagles, and others call this home. Tracking and photographing these horses is a true adventure. Read more about these workshops in the February, 2008 issue of Western Horseman.

Monero Mustangs Sanctuary at Yellow Hills Ranch
Located in Tierra Amarilla, just south of Chama, a 4700-acre ranch with scenic views gives sanctuary to about seventy-five horses. Many have been adopted from the La Jarita Wild Horse Territory. This is an incredibly colorful herd boasting red roans, blue roans, grays, palominos, bays, sorrels and more! The ranch teems with wildlife including herds of elk.

Placitas
The wild horses of Placitas roam in the beautiful rolling foothills of the Sandia Mountains. Because of their close proximity to civilization, they have become quite approachable. This often provides an opportunity to accompany them on their daily rituals. Sage dotted mesas under the famous New Mexico sky make a dramatic backdrop for these pretty little bands of paints, grays, blacks and bays.

Chama
Nestled along the Chama River, this quaint northern New Mexico town is known for it’s scenic landscape, abundant wildlife, and the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. It’s a charming place to return to after a day of trailing and photographing the horses.
