Fee includes guiding, any location fees, photo instruction as needed in the field, presentation on wild horse behavior and social dynamics, two morning and four afternoon photo sessions, two post-processing sessions, drinks and snacks throughout the workshop, and lunch in town on Sunday. Lodging, transportation, and meals (other than those listed) are not included. 4 WD is necessary, however, carpooling will be encouraged on both the the horse range and Antelope Island. A workshop rate will be available at the Holiday Inn Express in Tooele ($129 + tax/night) and at the Comfort Inn in Layton ($88 + tax/night).

Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. A nonrefundable deposit of $500.00 is required to reserve your space. Balance is due 45 days prior to the workshop. Exception may be made if there are still spaces available. All fees are nonrefundable and travel insurance is recommended should you need to cancel, or in the rare event of bad weather, or other circumstances that could cause cancellation of the workshop. Specific details are in the Registration Packet, as well as info about transferring deposits.

You should be technically comfortable with your own equipment prior to the workshop. An 80mm-400mm zoom or longer lens will work best for the photo sessions. There are many beautiful landscape shots to be had with a normal lens in these settings, as well. If you have longer lenses, definitely bring them along. A laptop is required for the post-processing sessions and I suggest you have a minimun of Photoshop CS3 installed. Some easy to moderate hiking may be required.

About the locations:
Onaqui Herd Management Area
The HMA is 43,880 acres and about an hour from the town of Tooele where we will stay for this portion of the workshop. About 200 wild horses roam the HMA at this time. One of the roads we will travel is a portion of the old Pony Express Trail. It is a good feeling to know there are wild horses here, since they were used by the Pony Express because of their stamina and endurance! There are some great looking stallions in this herd and the beauty of this horse range is evident in the photos!

Antelope Island
Located in the Great Salt Lake near the town of Layton and about 40 miles from Salt Lake city. The 28,022 acre island which is part of the Utah State Park System is known for its’ scenic beauty. Wildlife that inhabit the island include antelope, deer, bobcats, coyotes and a variety of birds and waterfowl. As photographers we will be on the lookout for all of these critters, however, the focus of our trip there will be the islands’ famous herd of about 600 American Bison. A beautiful time of year in New Mexico! In addition to two great photo locations with instruction in the field, as needed, this workshop will include a presentation on wild horse behavior and social dynamics and how to best photograph wild horses, a presentation and demonstration of Photoshop and Lightroom techniques by Dennis Chamberlain, and two intensive post-processing sessions tailored to the needs of participants. I am very excited to announce this collaboration with Dennis. The March workshop filled very quickly, so don’t wait to long on this one.

On Friday Dennis will give a general presentation and demonstration on how he works an image from beginning to end. He will be available for the entire workshop to help you with any Photoshop or Lightroom questions or problems. Most importantly on Saturday and Sunday, in-between the photo sessions he will spend an hour, one-on-one, with each workshop participant. You can spend the hour however you like, including working on your workshop images, or having Dennis help you improve your Photoshop or Lightroom skills, in general.

The Free-Roaming horses of Placitas have roamed the beautiful rolling foothills of the Sandia Mountains on BLM and private land for at least 50 years. Because of their close proximity to civilization, they have become quite approachable. This often provides an opportunity to accompany them on their daily rituals to observe and photograph the behavior and social dynamics of family bands. Sage dotted mesas under the famous New Mexico sky make a dramatic backdrop for these pretty little bands of paints, grays, blacks and bays. Trailing these spirited stallions and their harems is a unique experience!

La Estancia Alegre
Photo sessions include a full day photographing the exquisite Peruvian Pasos of La Estancia Alegre. Located between Santa Fe and Taos on the banks of the Rio Grande River, it’s rich pastures and pristine barns are home to approximately 40 Peruvian Paso horses that glide through the landscape with their four-beat lateral gait. These spirited horses are endowed with inner grace, boundless energy, and physical beauty, making them some of the most photogenic models in the world. Requirements for enrollment…
*Intermediate amateur to professional level photographer
*Laptop with a minimum of Photoshop CS3 installed
(Needless to say if you want private help with Lightroom, it should be installed on your computer. You will benefit most from this workshop if you already have a basic knowledge of and specific questions about the software with which you want help, be it Photoshop or Lightroom.)
*Ability to handle easy to moderate hiking with the possibility of having to climb an occasional hill
Suggested camera equipment…
80 mm-200mm or 70mm-300mm zoom lenses are ideal for horse photography. There are many beautiful wide shots to be had with a standard lens in these settings, as well. If you have longer lenses, definitely bring them along.

The following applies to all Two-Day Workshops:

Fee includes two days packed with great photo opportunities, guiding, any location fees, presentation on photographing wild horses and about their behavior and social dynamics, photo instruction in the field, as needed, water and snacks throughout the workshop, and lunch on the day we spend in Placitas. There will also be constructive image review during the lunch break, and if time permits, a post-production session.

Lodging and transportation are not included, however, carpooling will be encouraged. Four-wheel drive is necessary. Workshop is limited to six participants and registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registration and payment are due 45 days prior to workshop. Exception will be made if spaces are available. A nonrefundable deposit of $214.00 is required to hold your space. All fees are nonrefundable, and travel insurance is recommended should you need to cancel, or in the rare event of bad weather. An 80mm-200mm zoom, or longer lenses are ideal for wild horse photography, however, there are many beautiful landscape shots to be had with a standard lens in these settings, as well. The only requirement is that you be comfortable with you own equipment. Some easy to moderate hiking may be required.

Cimarron Sky-Dog Reserve
Cimarron Sky-Dog Reserve’s summer location is on 1000 acres of rolling grassland in Watrous, NM. Their goals include providing “a wild land reserve for displaced, un-adoptable and rejected wild horses whose only other alternatives would be a lifetime of confinement or perhaps even slaughter.” There are amazing views from the mesa top and a lush valley with rain-fed ponds where the mustangs come to drink and swim. The ranch and surrounding areas also provide habitat to herds of elk, antelope, coyotes and mountain lions.

Monero Mustangs at Yellow Hills Ranch
Located in Tierra Amarilla, south of Chama, a 4500-acre ranch with scenic views, gives sanctuary to about one hundred horses. Many of the horses have been adopted from the La Jarita Wild Horse Territory. This is an incredibly colorful herd boasting red roans, blue roans, grays, palominos, bay, duns, blacks, sorrels, and more! Opportunities for observing social dynamics and capturing close-up images abound. In addition, the ranch teems with wildlife, including herd of elk.

Some easy to moderate hiking may be required and an occasional steep hill to climb.

The Pryor Mountain Wild Horses, known for their beautiful Spanish characteristics and colors, offer a unique opportunity to intimately observe and photograph wild horse behavior and social dynamics. From the red rock, high desert landscape of Wyoming to the semi-alpine slopes of Montana there are beautiful views and photographs to be had along the way. Other species of wildlife that call these areas home are bighorn sheep, deer, mountain lions, and bears, to name a few. The magnificent Pryor horses and breath-taking landscape make for an unforgettable workshop experience.

This is Lynne’s seventh year leading wild horse photography workshops and her fifth on the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range where she holds a Permit from the BLM Billings Field Office. She is the author of Among Wild Horses: A Portrait of The Pryor Mountain Mustangs available at bookstores, nationwide. Signed copies may be purchased directly from this website. Her wild horse photographs are exhibited at Beals & Abbate Fine Art Gallery, Santa Fe, NM and Horizon Fine Art Gallery, Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Schedule
The first day will begin at 11am at the Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center. There will be a slideshow presentation followed by a late afternoon to early evening photo session which will include horses in the Dryhead area of the wild horse range (Wyoming). Two days will be spent in the Pryor Mountains of Montana in the heart of the wild horse range. On the last day we will return to the Dryhead for an early morning shoot, after which there will be time for digital darkroom and discussion. You may choose to return to the Dryhead for late afternoon light on your own. We end the day with a BYO Barbeque under the gazebo at the motel. Schedule is weather permitting and subject to change, so it is best to plan to stay overnight on the 29th, just in case we go up on the mountain that day.

You should be technically comfortable with your own equipment prior to attending the workshop. To take full advantage of this photo opportunity you should have a 80mm-200mm zoom lens, or longer, or the equivalent in other combinations of lenses. A 24mm-85mm will also come in handy to capture the breathtaking landscape. Moderate hiking may be required.

Jicarilla Wild Horse Territory
This 76,000-acre horse territory is home to over 300 wild horses of mixed ancestry. Some band seem to invite us closer while others flee across the landscape offering a variety of photographic opportunities. The landscape varies from open range, to pinon and juniper dotted woodlands, to tall ponderosa pines as it approaches the Colorado border. In addition to the horses, many wildlife species including elk, deer, bears, turkeys, mountain lions, golden eagles, and others call this home. The Free-Roaming horses of Placitas have roamed the beautiful rolling foothills of the Sandia Mountains on BLM and private land for at least 50 years. Because of their close proximity to civilization, they have become quite approachable. This often provides an opportunity to accompany them on their daily rituals to observe and photograph the behavior and social dynamics of family bands. Sage dotted mesas under the famous New Mexico sky make a dramatic backdrop for these pretty little bands of paints, grays, blacks and bays. Trailing these spirted stallions and their harems is a unique experience!
